Get a hardware firewall if you can. For the software firewall, i'll suggest Mcafee's or zone alarm.
I'm not using any, because i am a dial-up user (firewall is still useful but not so). The firewall suggestion is from TechTV. .

the best firewall is 10cm of air between your RJ45 cable and your NIC :P
