Cant speak for Intel, cos i dont use them... they cost too much.

I have an XP 2500 and well plesed with it. at present i have been running it for the last month A 12.5 x 170 = 2129 (XP 2800). i'm sure it would easily run at the stock Intel speed but i'm limeted by my generic PC2700 not likin FSB speeds above 170.

+ the XP 2500 at stock beats the Intel 2.4 in benchmarks etc

as for temps mine at the O/C speed are in the range 32 - 37 (idle - Load).

i can get the 2.4ghz intel cheaper than a barton 2500xp.. hence reason i posted this

Intel 2.4 Northwood = £135.00
AMD XP 2500 = £127.00

and with the AMD's ability to OC straight to a XP 2800 (£293.00) speed without an vcore upping thats why the AMD is a better deal then the intel +you did not state in your origonal post that pricing was a factor!

the barton is NOT what you espect !!!!
they changed the rating ... so the cash does not give a performance boost it is included within the rating
get a cheap 2400 oder 2200 which perform nearly equal to the bartonand wait till its much cheaper

Id go for the p4, use the retail heatsink and fan, which are nice and quiet anyways, and clock it to 2.8 guaranteed with slight vcore increase. Dont forget P4 are better for gaming. Watch me get Flamed :lol:

I've never been a fan of the Pentium 4s...they've always cost way too much. Before you reply with proof that the 2.4b is cheaper in some places (maybe most places, I haven't looked recently) than the 2500+...remember how long each CPU has been out.

Yes it's true AMD's run a little hotter. HOWEVER. I have a 2600+. When I ran it at default vcore and FSB (333mhz, 1.65v, ~2.08ghz) the CPU ran at 33°C. That's just as low as Pentium 4s...this was cooled by a Volcano 9 at about 4200rpm, which isn't that loud.

You're going to see a price drop soon on the 2500+ most likely. I bought my 2600+ not even 2 months ago now for $297. Last I checked (over a week ago) it was $235.

Yo man go with the 2500+. Wait till the 400mhz versions are officially
released and available. Then the 2500 will have undergone a nice
price drop. It is a really nice overclocker too. And the 512kb cache
will help you later in life.

Ok, i had a 2100+ clocked at 2500mhz which ran dam fast, beat me P4 which was a 2.26g clocked to 3ghz(Vapochill). Now the AMD beat the P4 at all benchies but games. Now it was close. The reason i say P4 is because the guy wants it quiet, the P4 will clock to 2.8 to 3g oh its own heatsink and fan which are nice and quiet. The amd will go high but surely will need better cooling which in turn equals greater noise. Im not putting down the amd here im just looking at what may be better for this individual. It is really very close now for gaming anyways between the p4 and AMD unless the game is CPU intensive ala Unreal 2?? In which case the AMD will be better suited. As posted earlier wait for the 400mhz athlons, however why not wait for the Springdale And Canterwood boards 800fsb? A P4 at 2.4 with HT, just round the corner. Its never ending. Rosch, where you say the amd runs hotter?? Not strictly true, my p4 on water cooling runs way hotter than the Athlon. Plus can u really trust the temp readngs anyways??? I think not.

Oh and keep that ti4200 - Will do great and only DX9 should force a change of card to something like the FX or R350.

I'm here to represent the P4 Bro!!! As you can see from my signature my P4 is running smooth @ 3.06!!! Now a 3.06 P4 would cost you, oh.... $587.00 nice little chunk. :evil: So I save a bundle by OCing my 2.4 up to 3.06 and I don't even think I'm close to the chips potential. The Albatron board is perfect for OCing too. I have been beyond satisfied with my new rig and would recommend the P4 2.4 to anyone looking to upgrade. I all really depends on your budget... :cry: I did some serious research on all the hardware that I chose to go with. There are tons of reviews out there. I am also about to upgrade my 1700+ xp and the one cpu that seems to be the no-brainer to go to is of course the 2500+ xp Barton....my question is this...after reading the posts in this thread......do the 2500+ xp's still sold now remain with the same overclocking ability...I couldnt help reading from one post that they have changed it now......and if so.......what do i look for on the cpu's ID to get one of the ones that first came out with good overclockability???

the only reason i switched to AMD when the socket7 technology first came out was the fact that INTEL abandoned me and basically left me out in the cold when it came time to upgrade my system.AMD on the other hand was glad to welcome me and i've been with thier processors ever since....and never had an issue the same way as INTEL gave me as far as forcing me to buy a whole new motherboard/ram/cpu if i wanted more power and speed.Thats something as a longtime computer geek that I am; will never forget.The computer business shouldnt force you to spend gaggles of cash for thier loyalty...just time to enjoy it.INTEL still makes the best cpu's and dont get me wrong.......I'm not flaming thier expertise.....but I am very happy to say that I dont use one and probably never will again and they have no one to blame but thier greed and lack of vision.

flashed the bios to rev 1005.....found this bios version is a slight bit better than the 1003 it came with and also a bit more stable.

how do you like that thermaltake 7+?

looks like a wicked cpu cooler....in terms of performance i'm wondering if it works better than say...the thermaltake 11?

Beep if that board handles FSB of 333 your ok, mine won't (EPOX 8KHA+) so my top limit seems to be 2600 TBred with 266 FSB.
