Revises down chip figures
MARKET RESEARCH firm IDC said sales of servers using the Intel Itanium were likely to be less this year because of competition from AMD's 64-bit X86 chips.
In a webcast, IDC said that the Itanium will be challenged by AMD's emerging X86-64 platform. Intel estimates it sold over 100,000 units last year. That means that AMD's claim that it would sell more of its 64-bit chips by the end of the year than Intel has sold Itaniums since its launch are likely to be correct.
IDC thinks that Itanium server shipments will be over $7.5 billion in 2007, but it's not the first time the research firm has lowered its expectations.
Earlier this week, an AMD Asian executive claimed the firm had shipped 500,000 AMD64 chips by year end.
Intel claims that the Itanium should be positioned differently from AMD's chips, and is intended for "big tin" systems.
That's hotly disputed by AMD, which has had a number of high profile wins in big clustering systems since the launch of the Opteron in spring last year. Rumours continue that Intel has its own answer to X86-64 technology, which it's keeping under wraps. http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=13606

hmmm I own an AMD because its cheaper then intel ....
BUT if money would play no role I would go intel for sure ... intel does make the better chips and please don't come up with hey AMD are faster at same speed .... yes they are but they are not as fast as an intel ... so its is useless to mention that since they do not have 3GHz
OK, now AMD comes up with 64 which .... nobody really needs
and CPU get again way more expensive .... and again their clock speed is very low even lower then barton CPUs .... the only thing that rises on AMD is the price .... and step by step it becomes more and more intel style ....
the time that AMD beats intel has not yet come .... and it will take plenty of time ... if .... thats AMD beats intel ...
