Hi there. As my first year at uni has started, i've now had the need to get a laptop.
Now I tried researching into reviews but couldn't come to any real answer.
What I want to know is, what is the best brand/make and processor to go for.
I am very familiar with computer tech these days so my natural assumption would be the AMD. I want at least 1gig of ram and it has to be small and leight. Small enough to fit into my rucksack.
Just don't want want it to be a massive laptop. Id say nothing bigger then 15" and preferably not even 15".

Thank you!

No budget but the sky isnt the limit. Lets keep it realistic. Oh and Mertsch, if AMD performs better then Intel on desktops, wouldn't the same apply for notebooks?

No, because Intel uses the Pentium-M for laptops
If you do a research you will notice that this one is a very powerfull CPU

Go for the centrino....if you want powerful notebook......you have to secrifice the mobility. Anyway i like the Dell Inspiron Gen 2, this notebook is very fast but not that mobile.

As you like a small notebook... the Gen 2 is not suitable for you. Yeah....for notebook, i like dell the best.

By the way what application are you going to use with your notebook?

Stuff such as Blue J mainly for programming but ill have XP on there with Office, some music, videos and use it abit like a desktop pc but probably no games but will need HDD space for music.
Im just mainly concerned about the cpu speed and ram. I dont want a really slow notebook

Ok well I read up and Pentium M seems to be the processor for me. Problem now is finding a small screen sized notebook that isnt so expensive.

How about the panasonic toughbook elite. They are light as hell.
I'm actually planning to get one myself.

Spec as follows (cut and paste from site)

Intel® Pentium® M Processor 1.50 GHz, 60GB shock-mounted HDD and a large 14.1" SXGA anti-glare Active Matrix Color LCD
Intel® Centrino™ Mobile Technology
Integrated 802.11a+b+g wireless LAN
Integrated DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive
Full magnesium allow case
Shock-mounted hard drive
SD Memory card slot
3.4 lbs. light and ultra-thin design

There is also the 12inch LCD model which is even lighter.

If you are going to be carrying it around, this is the laptop you are looking for.
