9700 and DX9

Is Direct X 9 necessary to run the 9700 range of radeons ? (Pro and non-pro). Because last time I installed DX9 (on my geforce 4, beta dx9) I had to reformat my hard drive.

Does it lower FPS in current DX8 games or anything like that either ?

No it is not necessary, Radeon 9700 support Direct X 9's feature but it is backward compatible.

Install direct x 9 will not slow down your games and programs because the driver and Radeon 9700 itself, is Direct X 9 compatible and support all the features that Dirext X 9 gives.

But it is highly recommended to install DX9 when you have a Radeon9700, not using the cards features would just be stupid.

Install DX9 if you want no game will use it yet, games will use the DX7 and 8 interfaces built in to DX9.

A performance increase has been seen with the use of the latest catalyst drivers and DX9 with the 9700! Even in older DX8 games !!It's a slight increase....but hell, why not ???? It's a good idea to go DX9..

Of course it is. DirectX 9 will not slow down your computer while playing some games.
