I've done this mod with success and without issue. I had a 5900U reference card, and it's now flashed and running as a 5950 (as the bootup bios states, as well as the core/mem speeds showing properly in Windows) with a decent amount of performance increase. It also overclocks higher than the card did before the update, so that has made a bit of a difference as well.
